An inexpensive meal:

    SPLIT PEA SOUP

      Ingredients:

      • 4 oz split peas   (100 g)
      • 1 large onion
      • 1 large carrot
      • piece of turnip about the same size as carrot
      • 1 large potato
      • 2 pints water     (1.25 litres)
      • salt and pepper
      • 1 ham end

      Method:

      Soak peas overnight. Prepare vegetables and slice.
      Place all ingredients except salt in a pan with the washed ham end.

      Bring to the boil, then simmer for 2 - 2½ hours.
      Remove ham.  Blend soup, or puree vegetables with a potato masher.
      Taste and add salt and pepper if necessary.

      Serve with chopped parsley.
