Motorists reminded not to leave valuables in their vehicles
following spate of thefts

WEST Surrey Police is reminding motorists not to make it easy for thieves following a spate of thefts from vehicles parked in supermarket car parks in the Surrey Heath area.

The thefts all happened on Wednesday evening (17 February) at three separate car parks – Sainsbury’s in Camberley, Sainsbury’s in Frimley and Budgens in Lightwater.

Two cars were targeted in the first car park where the offenders got away with a laptop from each. More than £1,000 of property was stolen from a car left in the Frimley car park including a laptop, MP3 player and mini disc player while a handbag was taken from the vehicle in Budgens car park.

Although theft from vehicles is low in the county compared to other areas, drivers continue to tempt thieves by leaving such items in their cars and are being urged by police to remain vigilant and remember the simple steps they can take to help reduce car crime:

· Don’t leave valuables in your car. Take them with you at all times
· Lock the doors, windows, boot and sunroof every time you leave your vehicle
· Use the vehicle’s security devices
· Make a note of serial numbers. Without them, your valuable items are untraceable
· Keep driving documents and personal correspondence at home
· Lock the car and remove your keys from the ignition at petrol stations. Keep the keys with you.

If you see anything suspicious in the area or have any information about these crimes contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222.

Call 999 if you have a genuine emergency requiring the attendance of the police (e.g. a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate danger).
Call 0845 125 2222 for all other policing matters.
Call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you have information about crime and don't want to leave your name.
