Police warn householders to double-lock UPVC front doors following burglary series

North West Surrey Police is advising householders to double-lock their UPVC front doors following a series of burglaries in Windlesham and surrounding areas where thieves have entered properties by opening up letterboxes and using implements to pull down the internal lever handle.

Two houses in Turpins Rise, Windlesham were broken into overnight on 19 March using this method and a wallet, TV, laptop, handbag and mobile phone were stolen. During the same night a house on Little Heath Road, Burrowhill, Chobham was targeted and a briefcase and cigarettes were stolen.

At around 2.15am on Tuesday 20 March two individuals managed to enter a house with a UPVC front door in Fairfields Drive, Frimley but they were disturbed by the owner and ran off. The first offender is described as slim build, around 16-20 years-old, approximately 5ft 6” tall. He was wearing a dark blue hooded top with the hood up and dark tracksuit bottoms with stripes down the legs. The second suspect was also of slim build, the same age as the first and around 5ft 10” tall. He was wearing a long-sleeved cream top, jeans and a black woolly hat. Both the men ran to the end of Fairfields Drive and then turned right out of sight.

Surrey Heath Crime Prevention Advisor, PC Robin Wood said: “In all these cases, which we are linking, the homeowners have locked their UPVC front doors but have not double-locked them. If the dead lock is not activated, it is easy to open the door from the outside and I would, therefore, urge residents to improve their home security and ensure these types of doors are properly locked.”

Anyone who has any information about these burglaries or saw anything suspicious should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 or Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously and free of charge on 0800 555 111.
