Heath residents advised to step up car security
West Surrey Police is warning motorists in Surrey Heath to
ensure they do not leave any items in vehicles overnight and that they
are security conscious when leaving cars unattended.
The call comes following two thefts from cars in the Briar Avenue area
of Lightwater between Tuesday, 23 and Wednesday, 24 February. In the
first incident a silver Audi had its back windscreen smashed and the
parcel shelf removed in order to gain access to the boot. As a result
a black laptop and bag, valued at £500 were stolen. The damage
caused to the car is estimated to be £100.
In the second incident the passenger window of a grey BMW was smashed
sometime between 11pm and 8am when it was parked on a driveway. Thieves
again made off with a laptop which had been left in the passenger foot
well. The stolen laptop is valued at £50 and the damage caused
is around £100.
Surrey Heath’s Crime Reduction Advisor PC Debbie Reece said: “With the
effects of recession still biting thieves are not likely to turn down
a chance to make some easy money, so make sure you don’t provide them
with the golden opportunity they are looking for. Always take any valuable
items with you and lock your car when leaving it unattended.
“People can help themselves and reduce car crime by always locking the
doors, windows, boot and sunroof each time they leave the vehicle. Car
security devices should be used and items such as satellite-navigation
systems, including the cradle, should be taken out. Simple precautions
can help residents avoid becoming a victim of crime themselves.”
