Regards 16 May 2008 Events to publicise anti-drugs campaign in Surrey Heath: - Drugs Bus at the Old Dean parade on Thursday 22 May from 2.30pm – 4pm - Drugs Bus at Somerfield, Bagshot on Friday 23 May from 8am - Presentation for parents at Carwarden House School, Camberley on Thursday, 5 June from 7pm The Safer Neighbourhood teams in Surrey Heath will be playing their part in supporting the National Tackling Drugs Week, which begins on 19 May. The focus of the campaign will be preventing drug misuse through education; reducing the availability of drugs and the amount of drug-related crime through enforcement; and reducing re-offending through treatment and support. As part of the campaign the Surrey Police Drugs Bus will be stopping off at the Old Dean parade on Thursday 22 May from 2.30pm – 4pm, and at Somerfield, Bagshot on Friday 23 May from 8am. The bus has been specially decked out with anti-drugs posters and is well stocked with drug awareness information and leaflets to take away. You can also grab some balloons, pens and other police freebies. Surrey Heath’s Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be on board to answer your questions and give advice on any issues concerning drugs. Children who visit the drugs bus will be able to enter a competition to be in with a chance of winning either a Nintendo DS or an Apple Ipod Nano. All you need to do is answer some drug related questions from the information available on the bus. The draw for the prizes will be made on Monday, June 2 with two winners in each group (10-13yrs and 14-16yrs). In addition to the drugs bus, Surrey Heath’s Youth Affairs Officer, PC Julian Crabbe is working in partnership with local schools to educate young people on the dangers of drugs and ensure they are fully equipped to make the right choices. As well as visiting the schools to chat with the pupils face-to-face, PC Crabbe has arranged a series of thought-provoking presentations for parents. The next presentation, open to parents of school pupils across the borough, will take place at Carwarden House School on Thursday, 5 June from 7pm. West Surrey’s Drugs Liaison Officer, PC Jay Mcleod said: “Young people should be aware of the dangers and harm that taking illegal drugs may cause them so that they can make informed choices. Drug misuse is a community issue and help from the public is vital if we are to reduce the drug problem. “Surrey Police is working with its partner agencies to not only enforce the law, but also to educate and raise awareness of drugs misuse and help families affected by it. I would encourage people to come along to see the drugs bus to find out more, and together we can tackle drug misuse and stop the misery and destruction caused by it.”
