Crime Reports - January 2008

31st January

One burglary to report this week in Carisbrooke, Paddock Hill, Frimley. This is a repeat burglary at premises that were burgled only a few weeks ago. This time the offenders entered by removing a temporary wood panel in a rear door which hadn't been properly repaired since the first burglary. A lap top and digital camera were stolen.

28th January

No burglaries to report from the weekend.

However, more disturbingly, 8 vehicles were entered or interfered with over the weekend. Five of these vehicles had been left insecure by the owner. These incidents occurred across the borough with items including golf clubs and Sat Nav consoles stolen. One vehicle actually had all its vehicle documentation inside but fortunately they were not stolen.

There is no excuse for leaving vehicles insecure and it beggars belief that people still do and are surprised when they get property stolen.

The only way to avoid autocrime is to always remove valuables and always lock your car.

25th January

Four dwelling burglaries to report this week.

1. Raglan Close, Frimley (Wednesday PM) offender has used a rock to smash the ground floor window to gain entry, stealing games console, Ipod and cash.

2. Aplin Way, Lightwater (overnight Monday/Tuesday) entered by putting an implement through the letter box to unlatch the front UPVC door lock (not double locked) stealing TV and mobile phone.

3. Clearsprings, Lightwater (overnight Monday/Tuesday) entered by putting an implement through the letter box to unlatch the front UPVC door (not double locked) stealing ruck sack and Ipod speakers.

4. Crosby Hill Drive, Camberley (Thursday PM) offenders have entered conservatory by unknown means (possibly left unlocked) stealing 2 bikes.

I have also noted a spate of thefts of number plates from vehicles. Sometimes it is the front, sometimes the rear or both. Please be vigilant and check them regularly. Check to see that they are securely fixed and if possible secure them with non return screws (easily obtaining from all DIY outlets).

Possible theories around these thefts are that they are for use in crime, to avoid paying for petrol or parking fines or avoiding paying the London congestion charge.

21st January

No burglaries or incidents of note from over the weekend.

18th January

Two burglaries to report this week.

1. Regent Way, Frimley (Weds afternoon). Offenders used a spade found in the garden to force rear window, stealing TV and games console.

2. The Avenue, Lightwater (Weds afternoon). A nasty despicable burglary whereby offenders broke into the home of an elderly lady. She confronted the burglars who restrained her and threatened her with violence before stealing just £260 in cash. The offenders made off in a dark coloured BMW motor vehicle.

This burglary is believed to be one of a series that have been carried out by these people in the Staines area. A full and active investigation is underway.

14th January

One burglary to report from over the weekend in Ford Road, West End whereby offenders removed the window from the side of an integral garage. Numerous tools were stolen from the garage but access was not gained to the main dwelling.

On a more positive note, a person has been arrested for burglary and has admitted his part in at least 10 burglaries in the West End/Windlesham area in recent months.

11th January

Two burglaries to report this week.

1. Church Lane, Bisley (Monday PM) offender threw a brick through the rear window to gain entry, stealing cash, a TV and an Ipod.

2. Carisbrooke, Frimley (Thursday daytime) offender has smashed a pane of glass in a rear UPVC door, reaching in to unlock the door using the key left in the lock. Stole games consoles and TV.

Last night, Thursday, in the middle of the night, a number of cars in the Heatherside Frimley area were broken into and a large quantity of property stolen. Fortunately all 3 teenage offenders were caught and are currently in custody. However during initial interview they admitted the offences but denied breaking into any vehicles. They were casually checking door handles and all the vehicles (at least 7) had incredibly been left insecure. As the vehicles in question didn't have any damage, their versions of events had to be believed!.

8th January

Good day to you all.

Christmas and the New Year period was relatively quiet through the villages. Please be aware that as you have a New Year tidy up and clear out rubbish and boxes from Christmas presents people do have a look to see what is in your rubbish bin. A stack of empty Ipod or PS3 boxes is a good sign to a burglar that your house is an attractive place to visit so please be careful about how you dispose of rubbish.

Whilst crime was low over the festive period officers were out on patrol dealing with any calls received and on 31st Dec at 2:30am Police were called to Clews Lane Bisley following reports of a disturbance involving youths jumping on a vehicle. They drove off in a vehicle just prior to Police arrival but Pc Talbot from Camberley located them further down Clews Lane. They youths were in a Ford Escort and it appears they were jumping on their own vehicle. However the 24 year old male driver from Pirbright had been drinking and failed a breath test. He was arrested for drink driving and has been charged to appear at Woking Magistrates on 17th Jan.

At 01:30 hrs on 28th Dec Inspector Dann from Camberley stopped a J reg silver BMW on Chobham High Street. The driver was a 26 year old Polish male from Camberley and he was found to be disqualified from driving. He and the vehicle were searched and some cannabis was found. He was arrested for driving whilst disqualified and possession of controlled drugs and was charged with both offences to appear at Woking magistrates on 11th Jan. The BMW was seized by Police because he was driving whilst disqualified and would therefore be uninsured. We have powers under the Road Traffic Act to seize vehicles being driven uninsured or when the driver is driving other than in accordance with their licence.

As we enter 2008 it would be nice to get some more Neighbourhood Watch up and running through the villages. These Watches are a great way of detering crime and enables you to do something to help the community. Locally all the Watches are organised by Mr Mike Potter who works tirelessly across the villages and is the first point of contact should you have any questions. He can be contacted via his e-mail which is mikerpotter@aol.com

On Wednesday last week I stopped and searched a white transit van which had previously been seen in suspicious circumstances in Lightwater. In that instance a resident had reported seeing two males in Mount Plesant Close acting suspiciously and passed the registration number. Such information is never forgotten and we are always on the look out for such persons and vehicles. In this case the vehicle and occupants were from Mitcham, London and were looking for scrap metal. They travel round and visit houses being built / renovated, especially with skips outside and sometimes use the I'm looking for scrap as an excuse to check the house out. Of course I have to be careful not to cast a slur over genuine scrap metal workers but if you see any such activity we would appreciate an early call with as much information as possible such as vehicle registration numbers, descriptions etc but please do not put yourself at risk to obtain such information.

As you may have seen on the news two persons were sentenced at Guildford Crown Court for their part in the robbery at Lightwater Barclays. Gemma Roberts who worked at the bank as a cashier received 6 years imprisonment and William Day from Bracknell who was her boyfriend received 9 years imprisonment. These sentences are very good and reflect the hard work put in by a team of officers led by Det Insp Wendy Whiting from Woking CID.

Kind regards,
Pc Ed Griffiths and all at Lightwater
