Crime Reports - December 2007

24th December

Just one burglary in this report which occurred at Commonfields, West End during last weekend, whereby offenders smashed a glass pane in the rear kitchen door to effect entry, stealing alcoholic drinks, jewellery and some electrical items.

One last Christmas tip, after Christmas don't advertise your new belongings leaving large computer, TV, video, DVD and appliance boxes outside for rubbish collections a great way of letting everyone, including thieves, know what you've got in the house. Carefully dispose of all packaging by tearing up boxes and putting the pieces in bin bags or take them directly to the tip or recycling centre yourself.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy Christmas and a safe and secure new year.

17th December

One burglary to report from over the weekend at Broad Street, West End whereby offenders have forced rear UPVC window to gain entry, stealing items of jewellery.

14th December

Two burglaries to report this week.

1. Sycamore Drive, Frimley (Monday daytime) offender attempted to force rear kitchen door but on failing this, smashed patio door glass with a rock from the garden stealing a camera.

2. Mill Pond Road, Windlesham, (Wednesday daytime) offender has forced rear kitchen window to gain entry, stealing cash and jewellery.

I am still seeing unnecessary thefts from vehicles. There have been a number this week including at least 3 where the vehicles have been left insecure, with mobile phones, Sat Nav consoles, golf clubs and even a wallet stolen.

10th December

Just one burglary to report this weekend in Blackdown Road Deepcut (Saturday AM). Offenders attempted to force open the ground floor window but ended up smashing it to gain entry, stealing jewellery.

Disappointingly there were a number of cars broken into across the borough with items stolen including an MP3, Sat Nav consoles and even a wallet that had been left in unattended vehicles.

10th December

Good day to you all.

I thought I would pass on some recent court results for local cases :

Your may recall from an e-mail during late August that I was doing some speed enforcement and stopped a vehicle for excess speed which subsequently made off from me. We pursued the vehicle and it finally ended in Bracknell when the vehicle crashed. The driver, David Baker, aged 50, from Reading has been convicted of dangerous driving, failing to stop for Police, excess speed, driving without insurance and two counts of theft. He was sentenced to 5 months imprisonment and disqualified from driving for one year and will not be able to drive, legally, until he passes a driving test.

Again on a previous e-mail I mentioned a search warrant we conducted at a premises on Guildford Road, Lightwater during November. I arrested two males in relation to forging insurance certificates and interviewed them at Woking. Terry Fountain, aged 64, from Guildford Road Lightwater was convicted at Woking Magistrates and fined £275. The other male was released with no further action.

In September thanks to good observations by a local resident three males were arrested for cocaine offences on Guildford Road, Lightwater. This matter has now been through the courts and as a result one of the males, aged 17 from Egham was convicted at Woking Magistrates for possession of cocaine and given a conditional discharge for one year and fined £70 costs. A second male, aged 20 from Lightwater, was cautioned for possession of cocaine and CPS decided not to pursue a case against the third male.

We are interested in white Ford Transit vans at the moment, now of course there are hundreds of them out there and it would be wrong to generalise as the vast majority are owned by hard working honest people. However a Lightwater resident spotted a white transit T804 RWC involved in suspicious behaviour around scrap metal thefts in the Mount Pleasant Close area. This vehicle has been involved in similar crimes elsewhere in the county. If you see it we would be delighted to hear from you. Even if they are having a day off from crime it is nice to keep the pressure on them and make our presence known. Similarly P559 JOR a white transit has been seen acting very suspiciously in Bisley and likewise we would like to hear from you if you see it. In both instances if they are clearly up to no good then feel free to use 999 but if you happen to see them driving along the main road then using 0845 125 2222 would be best.

I have mentioned thefts of plant machinery and tools recently and on Wednesday evening Pc Hempson-Reading stopped a red Manitou fork lift on Staple Hill Road, Chobham. It was a large vehicle and designed to be working in thick muddy off road type conditions as opposed to busy roads and clearly not what you expect to see on village roads. The driver gave false details but we ascertained who he really was and discovered not only was he disqualified from driving but the forklift had been stolen that evening from Guildford. He was arrested and held over night before being dealt with by CID officers from Guildford. He was arrested at 8:15pm but I remain unconvinced the vehicle had driven all the way from Guildford as it is the sort of vehicle to raise eyebrows if seen on a road and I would expected calls to have been made to Police. If you did see this vehicle being driven through Chobham please let me know.

We have been contacted by St Johns Ambulance who will be fundraising for their organisation by going door to door in the Surrey Heath area during December. St Johns have the correct permit to do this and have asked us to circulate this message to local residents to ensure if you get a visit you are aware of who they are. St Johns seek funds via direct debit, will not collect money on the door step and will be in their uniforms. Naturally with bogus callers out there it is good of St Johns to pre warn us of their intentions but as ever with door to door callers please seek identification from them first.

Kind regards

Pc Ed Griffiths and all at Lightwater

7th December

Seven burglaries this week, spread across the borough.

1. Chertsey Road, Windlesham (overnight Sunday/Monday) offender forced lock on rear conservatory door to gain entry, stealing golf clubs.

2. Pine Grove, Windlesham, (Monday PM) smashed glass in door enabling offender to open door, stealing jewellery.

3. Watchetts Drive, Camberley (Monday daytime) have forced open a small ground floor window, to gain entry, stealing jewellery and cash.

4. Kingsley Avenue, Camberley (Monday PM) offenders entered via insecure ground floor window stealing a couple of passports.

5. Bagshot Road, West End (Tuesday day) entered through a rear window and stealing a lap top and jewellery.

6. Bagshot Road, West End (Tuesday day) offenders have entered premises via front door without using force, stealing 2 lap tops, camera, mobile phone and jewellery.

7. Kings Lane, Windlesham (between Sunday and Wednesday) offenders have forced a rear window to gain entry stealing just an empty lap top bag. This burglary happened sometime between Sunday and Wednesday but was not initially noticed by the victim.

In the last few weeks I have also noticed an increase in non dwelling burglaries in sheds and outbuildings with tools, bikes and other possessions being taken. Please make sure that these types of buildings are also secure and possibly alarmed with tools locked away and ladders secured so that they cannot be used against you.

On a more positive note I can report that a male person has been arrested and is being investigated for criminal damage in the Gordon Road area of Camberley.

And finally a word of advice, commencing sometime during December for approximately 4-6 weeks, St Johns Ambulance will be active in the Surrey Heath area canvassing for donations via direct debit.

From St Johns National HQ they state that all canvassers should be in possession of ID badges and sweatshirts bearing the St Johns logo. They will not be collecting cash and in fact are forbidden to do so.

3rd December

No burglaries to report from the weekend.

Christmas Security Tips

1. Do not leave Christmas presents in your car. Retail therapy is great but having your newly acquired purchases stolen from your car can seriously damage your happy mood. Thieves are always open to temptation especially as this busy time of the year. Do not leave any valuables unattended in a parked car. Try to complete your shopping before you return to your vehicle, and when you get home, take all belongings out of your car and into your house immediately.

2. Think twice before storing presents in sheds or garages they are rarely as secure as the main house. Also, do not leave receipts with stored presents. Thieves can make a good living at this time of year by returning (stolen) goods with receipts for a refund.

3. Check your house contents insurance policy. If you are storing presents or expensive items, even for a short time, make sure you are not underinsured.

4. Don't put your Christmas tree (surrounded by presents) in your front windows as it could tempt thieves to smash and grab.

5. Travelling at Christmas? Do not load up your car with presents the night before as you may wake up to find that someone other than Santa has paid a visit. Ensure your house is well secured if you are going way and leaving the house unoccupied, even for just a day.
