Crime Reports - August 2007

31st August

Two burglaries to report this week.

1. Malthouse Lane, West End, (Tuesday daytime) offender forced rear UPVC door to gain entry, stealing an LCD flatscreen TV.

2. Sturdee Close, Frimley (Thursday PM) offender smashed lounge window to gain entry stealing cash from the house and then some garden implements from the rear garden and shed.

This week I also received notification of a hoax letter in circulation, sent by post, to householders. The letter purports to be from HM Revenue and Customs and is headed "Final Tax Amnesty Notification". The letter is pretty poorly written and contains no office address or phone number but asks for an attached form P86 to be completed and returned, by fax. As well as personal details, the form asks for bank details, including telephone banking password.

This is quite clearly a hoax so if you receive one in the post, do not respond.

Genuine correspondence from Tax Office, or any other Government Office, will always have a reference number, office address and phone number.

Under no circumstances should you divulge your bank details to anyone and certainly not password or PIN's.

Dear all

In the early hours of this morning 3 males were stopped in a vehicle on the A30 in Camberley. Initial checks at the scene revealed a number of power tools and other items in the rear, it is believed that these items have been stolen overnight from sheds or garages in the Surrey Heath or Thames Valley area. All 3 males are currently in custody but at this point no offences, which can be linked to them, have been reported.

Please can you circulate this message to your Watch members and ask them to check their outbuildings and report any thefts via normal reporting procedures, but to highlight that they have been asked to call and that the Surrey Heath neighbourhood team should be notified.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

21st August

Hello to you all.

First off we had an excellent result at the weekend. You may recall I have mentioned about criminals coming into the area attracted by the large houses. On Saturday afternoon an alarm was activated at a premises in Windlesham and a Pc from Camberley was in attendance very quickly. He encountered two males who had just burgled the house in the rear garden and after a very violent struggle was able to arrest one of them but the other made good his escape. The arrested male had cash, watches and jewellery from the burgled house in his pockets ! He was taken to Woking Police Station and has been charged with burglary and put before the magistrates court today. He is a 35 male from Feltham with a long history of criminal behaviour.

At recent meetings with residents the issue of speeding cars has been raised. I have been doing some work with the laser speed camera in the villages and Cllr Stevenson kindly accompanied me on Friday when we did some enforcement in Bisley. So far the two sites which have generated lots of speeding motorists and in need of some Police attention have been Guildford Road, Lightwater and Windsor Road, Chobham. I will be down there at random times so please do spread the word.

I put an article in the Chobham News last week concerning a green Proton I had stopped in Chobham late one evening. I searched the vehicle and found what appeared to be a large amount of heroin hidden under the handbrake and also two laptops in the vehicle we believe are stolen. I arrested both males, one was from Woking and one was from Chobham, on suspicion of possession of a class A drug and theft of the two laptops. I seized the vehicle as it had been used in crime but would be grateful to hear from anyone who has seen this green P registration Proton in and around Chobham in recent weeks.

Despite the seemingly constant rain the land did dry out last week sufficiently for a group of arsonists to start some fires on Brentmoor Heath in West End. Over the course of two days five fires started and the Fire Service were in attendance very quickly and dealt with them before they could spread. We know on one occasion a group of teenage youths were seen in the area and ran off as the fire started, but who they are remains unknown. If you should see any suspicious behaviour we would like to hear from you.

Talking about seizing vehicles I seized three vehicles in Chobham and Bisley over the last week where the drivers have been using them without insurance. Under the Road Traffic Act we have the power to seize vehicles being driven on a road without insurance. Once we have seized it the driver / owner has seven days to come to a Police Station with valid insurance / MOT and driving licence and once we have verified these documents they can retrieve their vehicle after paying the £105 recovery free plus £12 a day storage fees. This is in addition to any fines the court may impose. If they do not produce their documents or pay the recovery fees the car gets crushed. This is a great bit of legislation allowing us to deal effectively with motorists who choose not to obey the rules of the road, so please do let us know of any such drivers.

A couple of weeks back there a charity box was stolen from a chemists in Gosden Road, West End. The offender was identified and arrested. The offender was James Latham, a 37 year old male from Bisley, and he has been charged with theft. Mr Latham has been mentioned in my e-mails, but for many months, but it would seem he has come to light again and using the address in Arethusa Way. If you can offer any information about him or any vehicles he may use please do let me know.

Many thanks
Pc Ed Griffiths and all at Lightwater

15th August

No burglaries to report but please be mindful of the following found in the media this week.

It is headed - Parental Warning - don't leave home on August 18th and begins as follows:-

"It's always a risk to leave teenagers in charge of the house but be warned. The countdown has begun to a night when parents should definitely think twice about allowing their offspring to have a "few friends" round.

On Saturday 18th August suburbia will throb to an online invitation to stage a nationwide house party. Almost 1,000 teenagers have already signed up to host events at home. Thousands more will join them.

The aftermath may provide an unpleasant surprise for some parents, blissfully unaware that their offspring have designs on the family house".

Basically the article warns of an open invite, placed on the internet website Myspace for people to sign up and host a house party - to take part "in a unique event, with more house parties than ever before happening simultaneously around the country".

There is apparently a prize of £1500 for the most ambitious party and so far hundreds of people have signed up to take part.

The article finishes with "the competition is open to those 16 and over and a caveat on the entry form reads we strongly recommend that you do not invite strangers or advertise the party as open to all or else you will be responsible for the consequences".

This appears to be a genuine event that has been advertised on the internet but we all know what can happen at teenage parties, especially if they are unsupervised.

If you have, or know someone who has, teenage offspring, especially if they will be home alone this weekend, BE WARNED.
