STOP OFF-ROAD NUISANCE
The issue of
off-road motor vehicle nuisance has increasingly become an area of public
concern and a regular cause of complaint to Local Authorities and the
Police.
In Surrey Heath, police officers would like to publicise the facts behind
off-road vehicles which include all mechanically propelled vehicles such
as trials bikes, quadbikes, gopeds and electric scooters, which should
not be used on public roads, pavements and public spaces such as common
land.
There has been a rise in reports of anti-social behaviour caused by these
vehicles owing to intimidation, reckless driving and noise pollution.
The options of dealing with the problem are either enforcement or education
and encouraging the legal and safe means of enjoying what can be a fun
leisure pursuit.
Do you own
or ride such vehicles?
The advice from police is that if you ride on public spaces you are more
than likely breaking the law. You must not ride on public land, parks,
pavements and pathways and must not ride unlicensed bikes on public roads.
If you break the law you risk your bike being seized, receiving a fine,
points on your licence or disqualification. There is a risk of serious
injury to the user and others and you may be degrading the countryside
and wildlife. Riding in an antisocial manner can be the cause of much
distress to other members of the public. Follow the advice and everyone
will be more supportive.
Considering
buying a bike for yourself or a child?
Ensure the vehicle has an identification number, if not it might be stolen.
Consider the cost; you will need protective clothing and means to transport
bikes to legitimate sites. If used on the road, vehicle insurance, an
MOT and road tax will be needed.
If you have the permission of a landowner, you may still be breaking the
law if committing offences relating to nuisance.
There are few
legitimate riding areas but this can be a great hobby. For information
on riding legitimately please contact the Auto-cycle Union at
