Youngsters Are A Sporting Success

Future sporting talent from Surrey Heath showcased their
skills at the 10th annual Surrey Youth Games and finished in third place overall.

The action-packed four-day event saw 2,000 youngsters aged between six and 15 years old from across the county represent the borough in which they live or go to school in 11 sports - netball, hockey, judo, squash, athletics, rugby, boccia (a game similar to bowls for people with disabilities), basketball, badminton, tennis and football.

The games, which were held over two weekends (17/18 June and 24/25 June), saw youngsters compete in various age groups and there were competitions for children with disabilities and learning difficulties. Surrey Heath's athletics squad bagged two gold medals in the Year 5 and 6 and MLD events. Three silver medals were picked up in boccia, judo junior girls and mixed junior tennis and two bronze medals were brought home in girl's rugby and judo junior boys.

Portfolio Holder for Leisure and the Environment Cllr Patricia Pearce said: "Congratulations to the Surrey Heath team for finishing in third place. As Surrey's largest Olympics-style multi-sports event, the games provide a showcase for Surrey Heath's future sporting champions. For many participants the games are their first experience of an organised competitive sporting event and are exciting, rewarding and enjoyable."
She added: "The games aim to widen access and reduce inequalities in sport and physical activity along with promoting fair play and the spirit of friendly competition. It is a fantastic way of raising the profile of youth sport."

The games, which took place at the Varsity Centre in Guildford, Guildford Spectrum and Surrey Tennis Centre at St George's College, are organised by the Active Surrey Sports Partnership which works in conjunction with Surrey Heath Borough Council, the 10 other local authorities in the county and national governing bodies of sport.

Participants train at their school or sports club in the run-up to the games before being selected to represent their local authority through open trials and after the games the children are encouraged to keep up their chosen sport by joining local clubs.

Surrey Heath would also like to thank its sponsors Toshiba, Servon, Prontaprint, The Arena and Chelsea Football in the Community for their support this year.
