Help to Conserve Lightwater Country Park’s Heathland Much of the Lightwater Country Park consists of heathland and is an important fragment of the once vast Bagshot heath and although much reduced in size, still provides an internationally important habitat as it supports many forms of rare wildlife. Even though these sites appear wild, historically they have been maintained by continuous human activities such as livestock grazing. However, without grazing they are in danger of becoming overgrown, with the heathland and wildlife being lost forever. The Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Keith Bush said, “Without the help of volunteers, some of whom have been doing this great task for the last three years; we would not be able to conserve the area. By volunteering, people can do their bit for their community and, also, get the chance to understand and appreciate the natural wonders which are, literally, on their own doorstep. They are also ensuring that future generations can carry on and enjoy the natural habitats. Surrey Heath Borough Council would like to thank all the volunteers who took part and also the following sponsors for their support in this project: Premier Properties, Moore and Moore Carp, Nigel Jefferies Landscapes, Edmund Nuttall Ltd and SC Johnson Wax.” The launch of this conservation task was one of many events that were part of the ‘Go Wild in September’ volunteering month, organised by the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership. conserving their local countryside and were unable to attend the last
event, the Surrey Heath Rangers are undertaking a variety of practical
conservation tasks during weekdays on a regular basis and are always grateful
for help. For further information please contact the Surrey Heath Rangers
