Pupil's Photos Get Extra Exposure

Snap happy students in Surrey Heath have displayed photos they took as part of a youth arts festival in the borough.

Voices 06 is a partnership between the community development team at Surrey Heath Borough Council, Camberley Theatre and Surrey County Council's Youth Development Service.

Part of the festival saw Year 9 students (13/14 year olds) from Collingswood, Kings, Carwarden and Portesbury Schools given a disposable camera on which to capture 24 images of a short period of a young person's life.

Youngsters were asked to capture images which address questions such as, 'What would you change in your community?' and 'What do you like in your community?'

Corporate Portfolio Holder Cllr Richard Brooks who oversees youth issues said: "Voices 06 is a fantastic way to enable youngsters to express themselves and look more closely at the community they live in, what they like about it and what they would like to change. We would like to thank all the schools who participated in this project and helped make it such an overwhelming success."

It is the second year the festival has been held and five primary schools also took part in the project for the first time. They were Frimley C of E, Lakeside, Ravenscote, St Augustine and Cordwalles.

The project is funded by the Safer Surrey Heath Partnership, Surrey County Arts and Schools Out.

A mobile exhibition of the photographs were displayed in Main Square, Camberley, and at Camberley Theatre from July 28 - 30.

Schools Out aims to provide both a formal and informal support network for all people who want to raise the issue of homophobia and heterosexism in education.

Surrey County Arts is run by Surrey County Council and provides opportunities in music, dance, drama and visual arts for people of all ages and abilities.
