Freeze on car park charges
Motorists can look forward to no increase in car parking charges in Surrey Heath over the next year.
At Surrey Heath Borough Council's meeting of Full Council on Wednesday it was agreed that with the exception of the Library Car Park in Camberley there would be no increase in car park fees and charges in the Borough from April 2007 to April 2008.
Deputy Leader of the Council Cllr Edward Hawkins said: "Our fees and tariffs are in line with competing neighbouring towns when comparing the facilities available. We want to encourage people to come into Camberley and make use of its shops and amenities. We hope that by freezing prices it will do this."
At the request of the Camberley Library Manager, Councillors agreed that the current 30 minute charge for parking in the pay and display car park at the library be increased from 20p to 30p.
The one hour tariff at the Main Square Multi Storey Car Park will be removed but the other tariffs will remain the same which will mean that people can park in Main Square for up to two hours for £1.30.
Cllr Hawkins added: "Currently the average stay by motorists in the car park is 72 minutes. The removal of the one hour tariff should encourage more long stay shoppers to use Main Square Car Park so that short stay shoppers use the Knoll Road Car Park."
It was also agreed at the meeting that the Head of Environmental Services at the Borough Council put together plans to introduce a short stay tariff in the surface area of the Knoll Road Car Park to encourage short stay shoppers to use that area, making it easier for them to pop into the town. Once drawn up the plans will be taken to a future meeting of the Executive for discussion.
The car parks in the Borough villages outside of Camberley are all provided at no cost to the public.
