Council Tax Agreed At An Increase Of Only 15 Pence A Week

Surrey Heath Borough Council agreed the Council Tax for 2006/07 for its own part of the charge and the total charge including precepts from Parishes, Surrey Police and Surrey County Council at a meeting of the Council on Wednesday 22nd February 2006.

Surrey Heath’s part of the Council Tax has increased on average by 5%. This is a weekly increase to residents in a Band D property of 15 pence a week.

As the billing authority, Surrey Heath also collects Council Tax on behalf of Surrey County Council and the Police Authority, as well as the four Parish Councils in the rural parts of the Borough.

For every £1 collected 74 pence will go to Surrey County Council to pay for services such as social services, school and libraries; 12 pence will go to the Surrey Police Authority; around 13 pence will stay with the Borough to pay for services provided locally such as refuse collection and street sweeping, services for the elderly, care for the environment, health and safety, parks, open spaces and leisure centres; and 1 pence to the four Parish Council’s.

In a couple of week’s time, Council Tax bills will be delivered to properties in Surrey Heath together with a leaflet which gives details of the Borough Council’s budget and frequently asked questions concerning Council Tax.

Cllr. Moira Gibson, Surrey Heath’s Leader of the Council said, “The Council has set a budget that will maintain services as far as possible and keep the Council Tax rise at or below the Government's prescribed level. We have achieved this through efficiency savings and restructuring which will be continuing in order to balance our budgets against a background of high public sector inflation and a continuing reduction in real terms of government support."
