CAMBERLEY CAR PARKS CLOSURE In preparation for the imminent start on site of The Atrium on the former Land West of Park Street area, motorists in Camberley are being given notice that the following surface car parks in Camberley will close at 6pm on Sunday 10 September to allow for construction to begin. Charles Street North and South and St Mary’s Road car parks will close. The Main Square multi-storey car park and Knoll Road car park – a total of 1,702 spaces – will remain open as usual. In the medium term – in the months following start on site – Southern Road and Park Street will become access only, with Main Square multi-storey car park and Knoll Road car park reached by the A30/Knoll Road and Pembroke Broadway routes only. Further announcements of these arrangements will be made closer to the time. The developer will provide clear diversion routes for motorists and the priority is to keep local traffic moving The Council’s Corporate Portfolio Holder Richard Brooks, who oversees Camberley Town Centre, said: “The residents of Camberley and Surrey Heath have waited a long time for this to proceed, enhancing the town centre for the benefit of everyone. A major development such as this is bound to cause some disruption, but we ask for your patience and in return will do all we can to minimise it.” On managing the change the Council’s Head of Environmental Services, Tim Pashen said: “We have carefully monitored parking needs and a study has shown there is sufficient alternative parking in Camberley by using Main Square and Knoll Road car parks, plus Surrey Heath House at weekends. We have appointed specialist traffic consultants to further explore how we can release extra parking for the busy Christmas period.” A spokesman for Crest Nicholson Developments said: “On completion, the Atrium will bring 680 car parking spaces to this part of the town centre, as well as a new cinema, bowling, shops, restaurants, cafés and apartments. While the scheme is being built, we are working closely with the Council to make sure that car park users have access to the other available parking spaces in the town centre.” Main Square Manager Glen Fulton said: “Camberley is open for business as usual. The most convenient shoppers’ car park is Main Square, which is available 7 days a week 24 hours a day and has over a thousand spaces.” The Council is also encouraging use of public transport, and information on trains, taxis and buses is available online. The Council is also issuing a redirection map to motorists one week prior to the car park closure. It will be available at the Council Offices in Knoll Road, Camberley, from The Mall shopping centre and on the Council’s website www.surreyheath.gov.uk - look under Council then Parking.
